1  The history of soccer in Saitama

On the 4th of June 2002 , Saitama Prefecture hosted its first World Cup soccer game in Japan .  The match was held in the ‘Saitama Stadium 2002’, which was built in Saitama City for the World Cup games.  More than 55,000 people gathered to watch the game between Japan and Belgium .  The final score was 2-2.  It was a historic day for soccer in Saitama.  Saitama is famous for being one of Japan ’s “Soccer Kingdoms” along with Shizuoka and Hiroshima .

The global history of modern soccer is very old.  It was born in the United Kingdom in the 14th century, and people called the game “football.”  But the King of England didn’t like football and sometimes ordered not to play it, as it was too noisy!  He was also worried that young people wouldn’t prepare for wars, as they were too busy playing football!  In spite of this, football became more and more popular in the UK .  In the 19th century each university had its own rules, so the people from different universities couldn’t play football together.  The Football Association was founded in 1863 to make the rules of football.  Ten years after that, General Douglass of the British Navy visited Japan and introduced football to Japanese people.

In 1908, Hosoki Shiro first introduced soccer to Saitama. He was a teacher at Saitama Teachers’ College (now the Education Department of Saitama University) and started Saitama’s first soccer club at the college. The students practiced very hard and became good players.

Now, over one hundred years later, some high schools in Saitama have very strong soccer teams.  There are also two professional soccer teams in SaitamaUrawa Red Diamonds and Omiya Ardija.  Soccer is becoming more and more popular. Soccer has come a long way in Japan and has a truly bright future.  ( 301 )

Minoru さいたま市 の中学生。英国から来たJudyとは同級生です。今日はMinoruJudyに電話をしています。

Minoru: Hello.  This is Minoru speaking. Is that Judy?
Judy: Speaking.  How’s your summer vacation?
Minoru: Good. I went to Hokkaido to see my grandparents. How about you?
Judy: I was very busy in July, so I couldn’t go anywhere.
Minoru: That’s too bad. So, would you like to watch a soccer game
with me next Saturday?  My father gave me two tickets for the
soccer game at the Saitama Stadium.
Judy: Sounds great!  You know, I love it!
Minoru: Yeah.  I hear soccer is a national sport in the United Kingdom .
Judy: That’s right.  We call it “football.”
Minoru: How many professional teams are there in your country?
Judy: At first there were just twelve teams in the football league.
The number of teams became bigger and bigger, and there are now
ninety-two professional teams
Minoru: Ninety-two teams!   It’s very difficult to be a champion, isn’t it?
Judy: That’s right.  The best league is called the Premier League.
This is like J-1 in J-League.
Minoru: I see.  The game will start at 3:00
so I’ll come to your house at 1:00.
Judy: I’m looking forward to seeing you!
Minoru: Me, too.  See you then!  Bye!
Judy: OK.  Good-bye!
